Prayer Shawl Ministry at St. Paul Lutheran Church:
In April of 2009, a small group of women from the congregation formed the Prayer Shawl Ministry, after realizing a need and use for a prayer shawl ministry. A group of 5 ladies met to share their ideas and handicraft talents and the prayer shawl ministry was born. This small number has expanded to 16 active members who knit and crochet prayer shawls, lap robes and pocket prayer shawls in order to share God's love and comfort and peace with someone who feels lonely, forgotten or is suffering with a serious illness or loss of a loved one.
As we create each item we pray for the recipients needs. It not only reminds us of God's love for them, but also strengthens our relationship with God through prayer. To date, over 800 people have benefited by receiving a prayer shawl or lap robe. We are also very happy to share Pocket Prayer Shawls, which are available in the Narthex, and on special occasions when they are requested by groups, etc.
The prayer shawls are blessed at church services by the pastors before they are distributed.
We welcome new members to the meetings which are held the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 11:30 a.m. in the Cafe Koinonia at St. Paul. We also welcome anyone who cannot attend the meetings to be included as a member by knitting or crocheting shawls for this ministry. Our meetings consist of devotions, prayers and, of course, knitting and crocheting and fellowship.
We are all very thankful that the Lord has blessed us with the ability to use our hands in creating shawls, lap robes, etc. for the benefit of others. Praise the Lord!
If you know of someone who would benefit from receiving a prayer shawl, please share the name of the person with someone in the prayer shawl group, one of the pastors, or the church office. They do not have to be a member of our church, just someone who is in need of God's love and healing power.
